Gavin Dingley is a dual-qualified Advocate and Barrister with a commercial practice focused on high-value and strategically complex disputes. Practising from Edinburgh and London, he is trusted by leading solicitors, in-house counsel, and international firms for his commercially astute advice, effective advocacy, and cross-border capability.
He has particular expertise in shareholder and partnership disputes, breach of directors’ duties, company law claims, and contractual litigation, especially where interim remedies are required. He is regularly instructed in applications for interdict, freezing orders, and urgent interim relief in support of litigation or arbitration. Gavin also has extensive experience dealing with jurisdictional and forum disputes, enforcement of foreign judgments and awards, and claims involving competing or parallel proceedings in multiple jurisdictions. His clients include private equity firms, multinational businesses, commercial lenders, and high-net-worth individuals.
Gavin frequently appears in the Court of Session and Sheriff Courts across Scotland, and is also called to the Bar of England & Wales and has rights of audience before the DIFC, practising from Five Paper Chambers in London. Solicitors value his ability to act decisively and pragmatically in fast-moving commercial situations, particularly where complex procedural or jurisdictional issues arise between the Scottish and English courts.
He is widely instructed in cross-border and institutional arbitrations under ICC, LCIA, SCC, SIAC, DIAC and UNCITRAL rules. His arbitration work includes disputes arising in the energy, infrastructure, sports, and commodities sectors, often involving parties and governing laws from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. He is also experienced in arbitration-related court applications, including anti-suit injunctions, interim measures, and enforcement proceedings.
Gavin’s wider commercial practice encompasses breach of fiduciary duties, restrictive covenants, commercial fraud, and cross-border asset recovery. He is increasingly instructed in Scottish group litigation, where his experience in large-scale collective actions in England and Wales, most notably his involvement on behalf of former professional rugby players in the ongoing concussion litigation, brings significant strategic and procedural value. Gavin regularly advises on multi-party claims, case management strategy, and cross-border coordination, and is often brought in to assist foreign counsel or litigation funders navigating UK procedural frameworks. His dual qualification enables him to transfer litigation expertise seamlessly across jurisdictions and to deliver commercially focused solutions in multi-forum disputes.
Appointed as Standing Junior to the Advocate General for Scotland (2024–2028), Gavin also has an active public law and regulatory practice. He is often asked to advise on sanctions and challenges to planning applications and regularly appears in judicial review, statutory appeals and human rights-based proceedings concerning immigration, detention, sponsor licensing, and public procurement both for and against the Government. His public law work often engages retained EU law, devolution issues, and the interface between administrative and commercial law.
Gavin acts for both pursuers and defenders across a broad range of personal injury matters, including employer’s liability, road traffic accidents, industrial disease, and fatal accident inquiries. He is known for his forensic analysis, strategic approach, and ability to put vulnerable witnesses at ease while maintaining firm and effective cross-examination. Drawing on his experience in high-profile litigation, including acting for former professional athletes in complex brain injury claims in England & Wales, he brings a calm authority to cases involving sensitive medical evidence and technical expert material. Solicitors instruct him for his clear, practical advice and assured courtroom advocacy in cases ranging from routine claims to those involving life-changing injuries and reputational risk.
