Practice Profile

Alan is an experienced civil litigator who specialises in personal injury litigation.

Prior to calling to the bar he was a Partner and Solicitor Advocate at a large personal injury firm. He has over a decade of experience handling all aspects of personal injury cases and has a particular interest in workplace accidents, workplace assault cases and road traffic accidents. He has extensive experience in dealing with fatal claims for bereaved families, and catastrophic injury cases.

Alan has experience handling Fatal Accident Inquiries and has recently been involved in complex clinical negligence and disease claims.

In addition to personal injury and clinical negligence Alan has an interest in professional negligence and public law (including judicial review).

Alan tutors Civil Court Practice at the University of Edinburgh.

    An occupiers liability case where the pursuer was injured in a gym due to a damaged weight plate. Success at proof was due to the application of res ipsa loquitur.

  • Agnieszka Swierzko v Mathiesons Bakery Limited [2024] SC EDIN 43

    Represented the pursuer at proof in this manual handling case where the pursuer was injured moving trays of cream at work. This involved lengthy submissions on the law in relation to the impact on the burden of proof in such cases post Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act 2013. It also involved taking the pursuer’s evidence via a translator and taking the evidence of an expert witness on complex matters.

  • Fatal Accident Inquiry into the deaths of Mira-Belle Bosch and others [2025] FAI 15

    Represented a midwife who involved in the pre-natal care immediately prior to the death of Mirabelle Bosch. This was a complex and far-reaching inquiry in which senior counsel was instructed by most of the parties.
