Stable welcomes two newly called Advocates

ARNOT MANDERSON WELCOMES NEWLY CALLED ADVOCATES, GAVIN DINGLEY AND SHAUN McPHEE

28th June 2024

Arnot Manderson Advocates has welcomed Gavin Dingley and Shaun McPhee to the stable following their admission to the Faculty of Advocates in calling ceremonies held in the Reading Room of the Advocates Library (pictured above) earlier today.

For Shaun this follows directly on from the success of his recent Better The Devil You Know Seminar where delegates were impressed with his talk on Domestic Abuse: Civil remedies for Victims.  A BTDYK talk from Gavin will follow soon.

Gavin is now a dual-qualified Scottish Advocate and English Barrister, holding chambers in Edinburgh and in London with Five Paper. His practice encompasses international commercial litigation, public and regulatory law.

Gavin’s commercial practice has a focus on international commercial arbitration, cross border litigation and related court applications. He advises international corporations and often acts as part of large multi-jurisdictional legal teams as led or sole counsel in complex commercial disputes involving parties from Africa, Asia and the Middle East. He represents clients in disputes administered by the DIFC, GAFTA or under the LCIA, SCC, ICC, SIAC and UNCITRAL rules, and also has experience handling a range of court applications related to arbitration, including anti-suit injunctions, freezing orders or interim relief in support of arbitration or other related commercial proceedings.

As part of his regulatory practice Gavin represents institutions and individuals before various disciplinary tribunals and regulators with a particular focus on professional discipline and sports. He is ranked as a leading junior by the Legal 500 in Sports law. He is often instructed by international clients requiring specialist advocacy skills before domestic and international arbitral tribunals such as the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Fédération Equestre Internationale and the Basketball Arbitral Tribunal. To date, Gavin has advised on contractual disputes, immigration, compensation, selection, doping, eligibility, safeguarding, integrity and disciplinary issues affecting athletes, management, clubs and leagues from a range of different sports and jurisdictions.

Shaun, pictured below, specialises in public law and personal injury.  As a trainee then solicitor with a law centre, he gained broad experience in social welfare law – especially housing and judicial review. After clerking at the Constitutional Court of South Africa, he joined the litigation team of a local authority, where he worked across functions including vulnerable adults, criminal justice, employment, and licensing.

During devilling, he further specialised in public law, with a focus on education, prisons, and social work, often involving equality and human rights issues. He also gained broad experience in personal injury, including abuse, employers’ liability, and medical negligence.
Shaun has a particular interest in housing and homelessness. As a solicitor, he advised all manner of tenants, occupiers, and homeless persons, as well as national government on housing legislation and a local authority and social landlord on all housing functions.
Beyond civil law, Shaun may be instructed in criminal defence, especially sex crime.

Andrew Sutherland, Practice Manager at Arnot Manderson Advocates, said “We are delighted to welcome Gavin and Shaun to the Stable today.  With these new Counsel in our ranks we continue to boast an enviably strong and vibrant presence at the junior end of the Bar.
