Better the Devil You Know Seminars return for 2023

Better the Devil You Know CPD Seminar Series June 2023

In Person at the Mackenzie Building, Old Assembly Close, High Street Edinburgh and simultaneously online via Teams

Arnot Manderson Advocates are looking forward to welcoming three new Devils, Neil Morrison, Clara Smeaton and Eilish Lindsay to the Stable upon their calling to the Bar at the end of June.  To mark their transition from “Devil” to “Advocate” Arnot Manderson Advocates are pleased to dust off our snappiest ever CPD event title and invite you to: “Better the Devil You Know”.  We are pleased to present these Seminars as hybrid events again this year.  Those who are able can join us in person and enjoy a glass of wine afterwards whilst those who need to or prefer to can join from the comfort of their home or office.

Besides giving you an introduction to the freshest legal talent to reach the Bar you will be treated to a range of informative and topical CPD talks updating you on a variety of practice areas which will exemplify the full service nature of Arnot Manderson.  The series will feature three seminars each starting at 4pm, each will feature a Q&A Session and conclude at 5pm with a brief wine reception for those joining us at the venue.

Each seminar is accredited by the Faculty of Advocates (and by extension by the Law Society) for one hour of – free – CPD and each will feature a question and answer session.  These events are free but places are limited and early booking is recommended.  If you wish to attend online please use the booking links provided below.  If you’d like to join us in person simply email the AM Clerking team at amadvocatesevents@amadvocates.co.uk indicating which of the Seminars you’d like to attend.  We do hope you can join us.  If you have any questions please call us on 0131 260 5824.

The government’s Illegal Migration Bill has been variously referred to as the Stop the Small Boats Bill and the Refugee Ban Bill.

The Home Secretary says that the Bill seeks to stop asylum seekers from ‘frustrating removal attempts with late or spurious legal challenges or appeals.’ Meanwhile, human rights groups criticise the Bill as being an ‘extraordinarily dangerous’ piece of legislation which gives the government a ‘free pass’ to commit human rights violations.

Clara Smeaton looks at the contents of the Illegal Migration Bill, and what it means for vulnerable migrants and immigration practitioners going forward.
