Eric Robertson trains Kenyan independent prosecutors in advocacy
Last month, AM’s Eric Robertson and procurator fiscal Iain Gray spent a fascinating week at the Kenya School of Government near Nairobi. They were there as part of a programme with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to train around 40 newly recruited prosecution counsel in effective trial advocacy skills.
This was the tenth (and penultimate) training group in a dynamic government initiative, equipping advocates to prosecute, in place of the previous police prosecution system. The initiative was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the ODPP in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft f?r Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)/ the German Development Corporation (GDC) and the International Justice Mission (IJM).
Eric and Iain’s sessions took place against a backdrop of considering the 2010 Kenyan Constitution and criminal justice legislation. The group benefited from lively and informative teaching from distinguished Kenyan counsel alongside the individual and classroom sessions with the Scots lawyers.
