Practice Profile

Simon has extensive experience of litigating and advising on human rights and equality issues both at home and abroad.

He has particular expertise in prison law, parole and human trafficking. He is also regularly instructed in the Court of Session and Sheriff Court in housing and education cases involving equality law. He also receives instructions relating to personal injury and medical negligence.

Simon is a Standing Junior to the Advocate General (the UK government’s Scottish legal team). He has been appointed as a legal chair for the Scottish Social Services Council.

Simon is experienced in inquiry work. He is currently instructed to represent core participants in the Sheku Bayoh Public Inquiry and the Scottish Covid-19 Public Inquiry. He also has experience of Fatal Accident Inquiries and has contributed to Mason’s Forensic Medicine seventh edition on investigation of deaths in Scotland.

Simon has a strong interest in environmental law. He successfully represented a local community group in the Coul Links planning inquiry. He is currently instructed in a high profile environmental case which the international organisation CASE Europe has recognised as a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP).

Simon trained as a prosecutor and was a sitting manager for the High Court. He continues to receive instructions in criminal cases both at first instance and appeal.

Between 2012 and 2016, he worked in conflict zones in Colombia. He is a fluent Spanish speaker. He provided training to local lawyers, students and victims on international justice and contributed to legal publications. He also undertook advocacy work before United Nations and the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in the Hague and New York. He continues to advise on issues of international law and transitional justice.

Simon lectures at Edinburgh University on the Freedom of Expression elective. In 2016, he was awarded the Faculty of Advocates’ Scholarship.
